We wake in the morning to sunny skies and light wind. It’s cold out so we take our time getting up and packing. The trail is a mostly downhill 8 miles to Tehachapi where we’ll be taking a double zero. We walk into yet another wind farm so of course the wind stars picking up, but nowhere near what we went through yesterday. Once at a trailhead we catch a ride into town with a trail angel, Ted.
We get in too early to check into our hotel so meet up with General for lunch instead. The rest of our day is spent doing pretty much nothing which is a great change of pace after the last few days.
Blue Lizard and the kids head to the German bakery in the morning and come back laden with a couple days worth of pretzels and pastries. We go to a movie in the afternoon which marks the first time in a couple years we’ve been in a theater. We meet up with the Daley family for dinner since they’re heading back out the next day.
The 2nd zero day is spent getting ready for the next stretch which will give us a 17 mile water carry on top of a 6 day food carry. We are not looking forward to it. We do another pack shakedown and eliminate more gear we can live without. General rented a car and drives us to the post office to mail the extra gear ahead and then to the grocery store to resupply. We get a text from Mando later that they’ll be hanging out at their pool in the evening and we’re welcome to join. His hotel has an indoor pool which is way more attractive than our outdoor pool with windy 50 degree weather. We walk next door to their pool and visit while the kids swim until bedtime.

All that, plus an epic showdown with Hulk Orc 😈
