PCT: Days 4-5

Let’s see, where to start?  We made our way from Lake Morena to Mount Laguna over the last two days.  The weather continued to be outstanding with comfortable afternoons and nights around 30-40 degrees.  I don’t think I mentioned it in the last post but we’ve been treated to a near full moon since we started.  Its been beautiful but also feels like someone’s shining a flashlight in our tents all night long.

The morning from Mount Laguna started off damp with a heavy dew that clung to everything and then promptly froze.  We took a longer lunch than usual to dry the tents and quilts, but still made it an almost 12 mile day.  We camped in Fred Canyon for the night with 2 other hikers, Dan and Tony, who we’d seen off and on since we started. We got in late in the day and pretty much had time to setup camp, eat dinner and crash for the night.

Day 5 was a continued climb to Mount Laguna which started in our typical sage brush and cactus landscape and ended in a pine forest for a refreshing change.  We hiked alone for most of the morning and finished most of the last few miles into town with General.  Gavin got his trail name from Cuz along the way and will henceforth be known as Bat Boy.

We picked up our resupply boxes in Mount Laguna and grabbed a room at the lodge for the next 2 nights so we could take a full zero and avoid an incoming storm forecast to bring rain, snow, and 55mph wind gusts.

    1. He was playing in the woods on our 2nd day and had a bat nearly hit him in the face. Another hiker, Cuz, heard about it, came up with the name, and Gavin accepted it.

  1. I understand the necessity of the umbrellas, but in some of the pictures I get the impression you’re on some sort of Victorian glamping expedition 🙂

    1. That’s exactly what it’s like. Our packs are actually empty and we have a crew behind the scenes that carries our gear, cooks our meals, and sets up our feather mattresses.

  2. Excited to follow you guys on the trail! I’m glad you got off the trail for 55 MPH wind… Have you tested the tents in those conditions? Looks like a great time!
