We decided to hike South Dakota’s Centennial Trail as our main training hike for the PCT. It’s a 111-mile trail that winds through the Black Hills. Our plan was to hike the Northern 90 miles of the trail headed northbound from Legion Lake to Bear Butte. We ended up coming off trail at Rapid Creek after 45 miles and 4.5 days due to our dog, Kaia, not being able to continue. The rough trail and the heat had done a number on her paws and her energy. Lucky for us there is a local outfitter that was able to come and pick us up and bring us back to an area to camp.
