Despite most of our trips being to wilderness or less inhabited areas, we do have the occasional city trips. In this case, the itinerary called for three days in San Francisco to visit a few more national park sites and give Andrew a base for a few days of remote work.
We started off with a visit to Point Reyes National Seashore. This is a park we stopped at very briefly on a previous whirlwind trip of California NPS sites, but we barely made it beyond the visitor center on that one. The route to the park took us over the Golden Gate Bridge. First up at Point Reyes was a short walk to an elephant seal overlook where the seals could be seen swimming or sunning themselves far below the overlook. They were difficult to really see at this distance, so we went for a closer look.
Gareth drove us to Drakes beach, and we headed along the windy beach on foot towards where we thought we had seen more seals from above. Interesting note here; you are allowed to get within 25 feet of the elephant seals, which is an uncomfortably short distance from such large wild animals. The wind picked up as we went, and we were soon slowed by sand being blown into the kids’ eyes. Further down the beach, we passed a solitary seal in the water before coming across a group of at least a dozen sunning themselves on the beach.
After the park, we headed back to our hotel to rest before going to a movie. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was in theaters, and we made sure to find a way to fit it into our plans. We stuffed ourselves on popcorn and Icee’s, with the plan to repeat tomorrow for the third and final movie.
