We got up today trying to decide what to do. We were going to camp at Burney Falls State Park the next 2 nights, but check-in wasn’t until 2pm. We discussed a bunch of options, and eventually decided we’d turn the tables and be on the providing end of trail magic today. We went to the store and loaded up on cold drinks and fruit. Just as we were leaving the store we got a text from Allie that she was having shin pains and was trying to get a ride to Burney while Mando hiked. We picked her up 30 minutes later and she hung out with us most of the rest of the day.
We started trail magic late in the morning and caught a handful of hikers before the afternoon heat set in and everyone likely hunkered down for siestas. It was a lot of fun being on this side of the trail magic, especially knowing how brutal this last section has been with the heat. We also ran into a family out for a day hike who let us know that the public pool in Burney charges only $5 for a swim and shower. It’s usually hard enough to find a shower for $5 so this was a steal. We all headed to the pool and had a really relaxing afternoon.
We dropped Allie off at her hotel after the pool and then went to setup camp. The PCT goes through the park we were in, and we were pretty sure there was a hikers camp area. We saw some hikers disappear into a corner of the campground and sent the kids to track them down for trail magic. Before long we had half a dozen hikers hanging out at our site. We traded trail stories until bedtime.
