PCT: Day 125

I woke up this morning and headed to breakfast with Mando, Allie, and Brother Nature. We ate at Cravings which was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had yet. I headed back to my hotel afterwards and milked every last second of air conditioning I could before checking out at 11. It took all of about 5 minutes to catch a hitch back to trail.

The plan for today was a bit different than usual. I started 15 miles from Lassen Volcanic National Park which requires bear cans for overnight stays. Most people hike the 20 mile stretch through the park in a single day to avoid this. I’m doing the same, which means I can’t hike more than 15 miles today unless I want to hike 35 with a late start. I don’t. This worked out well as I ran into trail magic 10 miles in. I stayed for about an hour and a half and enjoyed food, drinks, and throwing a stick for a dog. The trail itself was all burn for the first 5 miles, no burn for the next 5 miles, and then almost all burn for the the laat 4 miles.

Most people were planning to camp right at the boundary to the park, but based on recent feedback, it sounds like these sites are under burnt dead trees. Having no desire to wake up as a tree falls through my tent, I opted to find a safer spot. I ended up on a ridge with great views and out of range of the nearest dead tree. I’m only 1.5 miles from the park and am planning at least 30 miles tomorrow so getting through it won’t be an issue.
