PCT: Day 121

If you read yesterday’s post you know I didn’t get much sleep last night thanks to a bear and deer.  I was still up around 6 and on trail by 7, but did not feel my best.  Luckily, 4 miles in I ran into a familiar looking tent and sure enough it was Mando and Allie.  I knew they were in front of me, just not where.  I walked with them the rest of the day.  It gets a bit lonely walking by myself most of the day so it was great to have company.

We started off with a lot of downhill to the Feather River which was supposed to have a nice swimming hole.  Highs have been around 90 lately and nothing sounded better than a swim.  The river didn’t disappoint.  We had a great place to ourselves and spent about an hour there, finally feeling cleaner for the first time in a few days.

The rest of the day was less enjoyable.  We left the river mid-day and climbed the entire afternoon to get to camp.  It was obviously hot, and there were several stretches early on with no shade.  I don’t recall it ever being this hot, including the 700 miles of desert we started with.  We stopped to fill up at every water source we came to and chugged as much as we could every time.  I was drinking twice if not three times as much as usual.

We eventually made it to camp and were rewarded with one of the best views we’ve had from a campsite yet.  We also had an early rising full moon to top it off.  As I was setting up my sleep stuff inside my tent I saw someone that looked familiar stop to take a picture of the view. It was Quadzilla, one of a handful of people working on the calendar year Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is the completion of the PCT, AT, and CDT. He’s already finished the AT and is now almost halfway through the PCT. Doing one trail is hard enough, and I can’t imagine doing 3 in one year. We chatted for a couple minutes before he moved on with miles yet to cover.
