PCT: Day 48

We planned this as a 14 mile day with a stop in Agua Dulce for lunch being a prime motivator to get out early.  We were back on trail after a short road walk and almost immediately spotted two bobcats in the clearing below us.  After that the trail began to climb with no shade in sight, and the day warmed quickly.  What we thought would be a quick morning hike ended up stretching into early afternoon.

The trail passed through the Vasquez Rocks area  which has been the backdrop for many movies and TV shows.  We took an accidental turn down one of many sidetrails and ended up at the park’s nature center which just happened to be having a talk on owls at the time.  Bat Boy has been all about owls lately so we stuck around for it to finish.

After that it was a quick walk to the Mexican restaurant in town.  We met up with Cuz, General, Mom Cut, and several other hikers and stuffed ourselves throughout the rest of the afternoon.  A few people continued hiking after eating, but most of us decided to camp in town rather than going back out in the heat.  Tonight’s “campsite” was an empty lot next to the restaurant which filled up with about 30 people throughout the evening.  Crowds have been picking up over the last few days as the bubble of higher hiker density has caught up with us.
