Brian picked us up early this morning and drove us back to trail. Our plan was to summit Mt. Baden-Powell and then descend before another storm moved through. We took a break a few miles in before starting the climb, and while stopped, talked to other hikers about an alternate route around the mountain. We were making poor time at this point and were getting nervous about being able to beat the storm.
We decided to take the alternate which would take us 5 miles to a campground. The hike was easy, mostly downhill, and kept us out of the wind. We got into the deserted Southfork Campground mid-afternoon. Blue Lizard and I relaxed the rest of the day while the kids played. The storm moved in overnight, but we had descended enough that we were below the snow line and only got rained on. Tomorrow’s plan was to take the next partof the alternate which would climb back to the PCT over about five miles.
